സ്പീക്കറെ എന്തു വിളിക്കണം.............. ?
ഇന്നത്ത മാതൃഭൂമി പത്രത്തില്‍ വന്ന സ്‌പീക്കറുടെ ഇഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ ശാകുന്തളം മുതല്‍ കുതിരപന്തയം വരെ എന്ന തലക്കെട്ടില്‍ നാലാം ഭാഗമായിട്ടാണ്‌ ഈ ചര്‍ച്ചയെപ്പറ്റി പരാമര്‍ശിക്കുന്നത്‌. sir എന്ന പദത്തിന്‌ ബഹുമാനാര്‍ത്ഥം പേരിനു മുന്നില്‍ കൊടുക്കുന്ന പദം എന്നു മാത്രമേ അര്‍ത്ഥമുള്ളൂ SUPERIOR IN RANK എന്നും അര്‍ത്ഥമുണ്ട്‌. ഡിക്ഷനറിയില്‍ a word of respect used in addressing a man എന്നതിന്റെ പരിഭാഷയായി ചേര്‍ത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്‌ ബഹുമാനാര്‍ത്ഥം പേരിനു മുന്നില്‍ വെക്കുന്ന പദവി എന്നാണ്‌.man എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ മനുഷ്യന്‍ എന്നുകൂടി അര്‍ത്ഥമുണ്ട്‌.man is a social animal എന്നു പറയുമ്പോള്‍ മനുഷ്യന്‍ ഒരു സാമൂഹ്യ ജീവിയാണെന്നാണ്‌ അര്‍ത്ഥമാക്കുന്നത്‌ അല്ലാതെ പുരുഷന്‍ ഒരു സാമൂഹിക ജീവിയാണെന്നല്ല. madam എന്ന വാക്കിന്‌ മാന്യയായ സ്‌ത്രീ എന്നുള്ള അര്‍ത്ഥത്തിനു പുറമേ വേശ്യാലയം നടത്തിപ്പുകാരി എന്നുകൂടി അര്‍ത്ഥമുണ്ട്‌. അങ്ങിനെ വരുമ്പോള്‍ സാര്‍ എന്ന് അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്യുന്നത്‌ തന്നെയാണ്‌.മാന്യതയും മര്യാദയും

അയ്യോ,അയ്യയ്യോ. ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു അര്‍ഥം കൂടി ആ വാക്കിനുണ്ടായിരുന്നോ!!!
madam/ma'am വിളി പ്രചാരത്തോടെ 'sir' എന്ന് വനിതകളെ സംബോധന ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ എന്തോ ചുമ്മാ ഒരു കുറച്ചില്‍ :) :) :) അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നു. സ്കൂളില്‍ അധ്യാപകര്‍ എല്ലാവരും 'സാര്‍' ആയിരുന്നത് ടീച്ചറും സാറും ആയിട്ട് എത്ര കാലം ആയിക്കാണും. (ഞങ്ങളുടെ നാട്ടില്‍ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് മീഡിയം കുട്ടികള്‍ ആണ് അതു പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ചത്. ടീച്ചര്‍ എന്നത് അറിയാമായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ,ഞാന്‍ ഒക്കെ പത്താം ക്ലാസ്സ് വരെ 'സാര്‍' വിളിയുടെ ടിം ആയിരുന്നു.)
('രാഷ്ടപതി' എന്നതിനെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചര്‍ച്ച ഈ അടുത്ത ഇടക്ക് വരെക്കും കണ്ടിരുന്നു. അവസാനം 'രാഷ്ട്രത്തിന്റെ അധിപതി' എന്നതാണ് 'രാഷ്ടപതി'യുടെ അര്‍ഥം എന്നും ഭരണഘടനയുടെ സം‌രക്ഷണവും ശരിയായി പാലിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു എന്ന് ഉറപ്പ് വരുത്തുകയുമാണ്‍ കര്‍ത്തവ്യം എന്നും തീരുമാനത്തിലെത്തി :)

Vinaya, I wish your problem with such usage like 'Madam' were motivated rather by concerns for genuinely gender-neutral terms.
Whatever is said favouring Sir for a neutral term,I'm afraid it is short of the desired neutrality.
Further, I feel that just because 'Madam' has certain connotations associated with its being equivalent to a lady up keeper of a brothel, the more popular usage of the word as the feminine equivalent of 'Sir'isnot nullified.
Again, the sense of shame attached to sexual labour or refusing to view sex work as labour is more a symptom of the typically patriarchal attitude to women in the context of sex. I would not share this bias whatever is your/kerala feminists' argument to legitimize this
